Summer Storm by L. Wilder

Summer Storm by L. Wilder

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Overall rating: 3.3

I realize this is a novella, and a lead into a series... but.. damn, the characters moved fast in this story. The instant "love" was a bit unrealistic to me.

They meet via email while Allie, who is a child of the foster system and employee of the Department of Children's Services is trying to secure a contractor to build a place where kids can congregate in a safe and fun environment.
Their emails turn flirty rather quickly, and by the time they meet, it seems to be love at first sight. Again, I get that this is a novella, but this was seriously fast.

I didn't really connect with the characters in this short story. However, looking at the ratings on the rest of the series, I think I'm going to continue, or at least see how Maverick turnes out.

*****5 Blindsided Stars*****

A dark and at times creepy, sinister, and extremely twisted story! And in typical Stevie J. Cole fashion she completely blew my mind!

Edwin Mercer is a New York Times bestselling author of dark horror, all of his books have had great reviews and sold well, until his last book, which got some pretty bad reviews. So on his newest book he's looking for someone to co-author with. And by the way, he's also a serial killer.

Enter Miranda Cross, a young up and coming author, whose idol is Edwin Mercer, she, along with thousands of others, sent Edwin a short story to read and review. And of course she won.. wouldn't have been much of a story if she hadn't, right?

From the first day she met Edwin, she had bad feelings about him, just that something was off... and he was angry, and took his rage out on everything, and everyone, around him, including Miranda.

Then we have Jax Peralta, a homicide detective who has been trying to nail this serial killer, and coincidentally is also a big fan of Edwin Mercer.

This book seemed a bit slow to me... but then at one point it all comes together and it's well and truly an "Oh fuck! No!" moment.
This book took everything I just read and turned it completely upside down in the most startling way possible! I wanted to gently lay my Kindle down and run far, far away! I loved it!

This is a total MUST READ if you love Stevie J. Cole and her dark and twisted mind!

I would have enjoyed knowing a bit more about Jax, a bit more about his background, but the book was complete without it. This book is a stand alone.

If I could give this book 10 Stars, I would!
Ker Dukey is one of my favorite dark and twisted authors. She nails it everytime and this time is no exception.

I was looking forward to this book, couldn't wait to get my hot little Kindle wrapped around it! And when I woke up and it was on my Kindle, I was like...
Then while I was reading it and I was like...

This book kept me totally engaged! Loved every page, and turned them quickly! Every character had it's place and was placed well within the story and kept me connected.

"Everyone knows I was abducted with my sister when I was fourteen and I somehow managed to escape when I was eighteen, leaving my then thirteen-year-old sister behind."
Jade Phillips and her sister Macy were taken by "Benny" (Benjamin), who is a complete psychopath! He takes the girls and keeps them in separate cells, and dresses them up like dolls.

Macy isn't perfect anymore, not after Benny scars her face, but Jade is, Jade is his perfect Dirty Little Doll, and he uses her sexually. Jade is mouthy, she doesn't just give in to Benny, which earns her almost daily beatings.

Finally she has the opportunity to escape after four years, but in order to do so, she must leave her sister, Macy, behind. She runs, with the intent of getting help and sending them back to get Macy. But in running, she has a terrible accident, and spends time in a drug induced coma.

Once she wakes up she tries to tell the police where she and Macy were held, to no avail. They can't find the cabin.
Pick up the story eight years later and Jade is now a detective, and every spare moment is spent looking for Macy, and living with her childhood, next door neighbor, Bo. Bo *tries* to understand what Jade has been through, but he really doesn't, what he gives her is more like pity. I liked Bo, but didn't feel like he was the one for Jade.

"Dillon is the alpha male who beats on his chest and dominates my headspace."

"Dillon fucks me like a lion would his bitch in heat as his protectiveness washes over me."
Dillon is Jade's partner on the police force. Now *him* I like. He's no nonsense, and he doesn't give her pity, he just accepts and respects her for the strong woman she's become over the last 8 years since she escaped. He becomes her rock.
The one thing I didn't care for much for, and didn't expect, was the MAJOR cliffhanger.
But looks like it comes out in about 6 weeks from now, so not too long of a wait.

It's taken me some time to sit down and decide how to review this book. Did I love it? Did I hated it?

For most of the book I was kinda like...
But somewhere there in the middle I perked up, it got my attention, I was really starting to feel it!
The cell.. it was deliciously dark, the story took some nice twists... but then, the questions. Oh so many questions!

♦ Who was Beard?
♦ Who was Breath?
♦ Who, or what, were "The Babies"?
♦ What happened to the safe full of money?
And a bigger question...

♦ What was real?
♦ Did it happen?
And the mother of all questions...
I was really into the book at this point, but there were a few sticking points for me.

The amount of sex they had in the cell. Really? Your life is on the line in the most horrific way, and all you're thinking about is sex?

And one line that made me roll my eyes....

"I would kill for a popsicle and a fluffy pillow right now, I said" -Kyle

That was the dumbest thing that could have ever been said at that point.

Okay, so there could be somewhat of an explanation... but it all depends on which version of the story you're willing to believe.

But even at that I was really into the book right up to the end. That ending pissed me off. This books says "standalone".. that is not the ending for a "standalone" book. Too much was left open ended, and obviously from my review, lots and lots of questions unanswered.

Would I read the next book if this were to become a series? Possibly. As long as I knew there would actually be an ending!

I have revised my rating, bumping it from 3.3 Stars to 3.6 Stars only because after getting into this review, and after calming down for a few days, I realized that the saving grace was that I *did* enjoy the middle(ish) part of the book.

I wanted to love this book, I really did, but it just didn't hit the mark for me.

Sam is just a normal everyday college student who enjoys getting a little high and shooting pictures with her camera, mainly selfies. Between classes she likes to hide by the dumpsters and get stoned before class, which is where her photography teacher, Aiden, finds her.

Aiden is the good looking teacher that most of the girls are lusting after, but his shutter only snaps for Sam.

The two plunge into covetous, and forbidden, Teacher/Student affair, and I have to say some of the sex scenes were delicious!

But, I just couldn't get into the story or the characters. They seemed very one dimensional and flat. The premise of the story was a good one, and perhaps it could have been fleshed out more making the characters have a better connection.

The one thing I would strongly suggest is, "Edit, edit, edit...". There were a lot of editing mistakes, to the point of distraction at times.

Like I said, I really wanted to like this story, the author is such a sweetheart. I *will* be watching for more from her in the future, and I hope she takes this review in the helpful context in which it was meant.
